Brain Fuel Chocolate Avocado Smoothie

When I think of this smoothie, the term “brain fuel” comes to mind. This smoothie feeds your command center with all the nutrition it needs to operate optimally. Let’s take a look at how these ingredients can enhance brain function.

Avocado

Avocado is full of the “good” fat, aka the monounsaturated fat. These types of fats improve blood pressure, which means better blood flow to and from your brain. 

Oats

Your brain needs a steady supply of energy to function properly. Fiber helps food digest slower, lending to a steadier flow of energy. Starting your day with fiber-rich oats keeps you fuller longer and helps maintain concentration and focus (R).

Walnuts 

In addition to preventing age-related degenerative disease, studies have shown walnuts can improve memory (R). They are packed with omega 3 fatty acids, antioxidants and Vitamin E — all of which contribute to overall brain health and combat the effects of aging.

Cacao

Cacao is chock full of antioxidant promoting flavonoids. These flavonoids have shown neuroprotective actions in the brain, especially in regions that are involved in learning and memory (R).

Serves 1

 Ingredients:

  • 1/2 medium banana, frozen 

  • 1/4 avocado

  • 2 Tbsp rolled oats

  • 2 Tbsp walnuts 

  • 1 Tbsp raw cacao

  • 1 cup water

  • 1/2 cup ice

Directions

  1. Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender and process until smooth.

  2. Pour into cup and enjoy immediately
